Storing Your RV For The Winter Here Are Some Tips

With winter looming right around the corner, it’s time to begin thinking about steps you need to take to ensure your RV is properly and safely stored before the cold sets in. Though it comes every year, folks are often either sad to say goodbye to the RV season for a few months or relieved because they now have slightly less maintenance to worry about in their day to day life. Taking care of these basic RV maintenance must-dos will make your return to RV life in the spring much more enjoyable:

  • Empty and flush your fresh water, gray water and black water tank
  • Thoroughly clean the inside and outside of your RV
  • Prepare your batteries to withstand the cold

If this is your first winter with your RV, you’ll want to make sure you know ahead of time what needs to be done to help it withstand the colder months that are coming.

Clean And Empty The Water Systems

Cleaning and emptying your RV’s water systems is possibly the most important step you need to take when winterizing your RV. If you fail to drain water from all three of the tanks, you could find that in the Spring when it’s time to get the RV spruced up for summer travels, you have broken fittings and lines, due to having left liquid in the tanks and the temperatures dropping low enough for it to freeze, causing damage.

To protect your RV’s plumbing and water system, make sure that you thoroughly drain the the fresh water tank and both the gray and black water tanks. Saving the black tank for last will help to ensure that all of the toilet waste from the black tank is thoroughly flushed out. It is also a good precaution to pump non-toxic RV antifreeze through the system as well as an added guarantee that your tanks will be ready for you RV season comes back around.

Give Your RV A Good Clean - Inside and Out

Not only will returning to a clean RV in the spring or summer feel incredible, a thorough cleaning job before winter storage will help ensure that pests and rodents aren’t as attracted to your RV as they otherwise might be. Food crumbs, leftover trash and traces of snacks left behind are all temptations to rats, mice and other pests that are likely to want to chew through wiring and rubber components in your RV’s systems. Setting mice and ant traps will add an extra layer of precaution you might want to take before you lock up for the winter.

Preparing Your RV’s Batteries For Winter

Caring for your RV’s batteries throughout the winter is one of the biggest things you can do to make sure your RV is in traveling shape when nicer weather comes back around. It will also help increase the battery’s lifespan if stored properly!

The best practice is to remove the batteries from your RV and store them in a cool, dry place. Checking the battery’s charge life every 6 weeks or so will help you gauge if they need to be charged fully up again, which will prevent them from freezing. You can also use a battery maintainer to make sure they are fully charged throughout the winter for extra peace of mind.
